The vast majority of supply chain organizations say that they lack the skills neededfor digitization plans. A Gartner survey from 2021 revealed that 57% of manufacturing leaders claimed that they lacked enough skilled workers for complete digitization [1]. While the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the need for digital transformation, an overall lack of the appropriate skills placed a heavy burden upon organizations who weren’t already prioritizing that transformation.
Evolving Challenges
The largest issue is that many companies simply haven’t been able to identify the
skills necessary for digital transformation. Many leaders found themselves unable to
manage the chaos that stemmed from the pandemic, let alone find time to focus on
the development of skills they knew little about. For these leaders, it’s up to them to
hire and develop the appropriate talent to meet these new challenges.
Talent is the Key
There is ample evidence which suggests that the key to digital transformation lies
not with the technology itself, but with the talent assigned to it. Technology is
always evolving, but if organizations don’t follow suit by properly developing and
training talent to meet the needs of the digital future, that technology will simply
pass them by. From the top down, organizations must prioritize talent over
technology.
A New Path Forward
The old ways of talent management have been proven to now be obsolete. Small
scale alterations and adjustments aren’t good enough anymore. The leadership
team’s approach needs to adjust so that broader talent management becomes a
priority. Employees need to be empowered to act upon the constantly changing
needs of their organizations. The world is changing at an alarmingly fast rate, and
the organized structure of talent management needs to catch up before it’s too late
